THE 2011 YOUNG ACTORS CONSERVATORY

The Young Actors Conservatory - fondly known as YAC - is a unique summer intensive that offers conservatory-style training for Houston-area middle and high school students. Led by recognized theatre professionals, YAC classes and laboratories encourage participants to explore every facet of dramatic production.

Using a total immersion method, students develop scripts; create costumes, sets and props; design lights and sound; learn movement and voice techniques; and rehearse and perform roles. Building on what they've learned, students focus on a central theme to conceptualize, write, design and perform an original theatre piece, combing the students' own material with texts taken from the work of well-known writers. The program culminates in a fully realized production of this work at Stages Repertory Theatre. Mark your calendars now and plan on joining us to see all of our talented conservatory participants for FREE!

YAC is divided into two different sessions: the first for middle school students, to be held June 20 - July 1; and the second for high school students, with classes July 11 - August 5. Once again this year admission to the high school program is by audition only, and tuition is FREE for all participants thanks in part to contributions from a generous group of donors.

FOR TEACHERS
Teacher’s Advisory Council
Stages invites experienced educators from all disciplines to share their expertise with our Education Department. Educators, elementary through university-level, will provide feedback on EarlyStages’ selections, TEKS-linked curriculum guides, residencies, professional development and the professional internship program. The TAC meets quarterly, and members will receive two complimentary tickets to shows in our season as a small token of thanks.

Professional Development
Stages Repertory Theatre is an approved Continuing Professional Education Provider for the state of Texas. Earn CPE hours while recharging your creative batteries!

Developed with the theatre teacher in mind, but open to all teachers, our Professional Development workshops are focused on refreshing and building theatre skills. Each workshop is led by a theatre professional who excels in his/her chosen field. Spend three hours in intensive workshops that will leave you energized and filled with strategies to take back to your classroom or production. Workshops take place at Stages Repertory Theatre or on-site at your location.

Past workshops have included: Mask Technique for the Actor; Directing for Musicals; Stage Make-Up 101; Improv for Performance; Advanced Sound Design; Broadway Choreography; and Performing Shakespeare.

In-School/After School Residencies
Theatre has natural connections to core classroom curriculum areas such as math, science, social studies and language arts. In-school residencies may be crafted to meet a teacher’s specific classroom needs, or choose a pre-designed curriculum with such literary classics as Macbeth, Death of a Salesman, The Diary of Anne Frank, and Romeo and Juliet. After-school residencies are performance-based. Watch your students take on every aspect of theatrical production through the process of creating an original theatre piece based on student writing. Students learn the skills of the playwright, designer, actor and producer while working with an ensemble.
