The Andrews Brothers
By Roger Bean
"No-holds-barred slapstick goofiness.... An entertaining, crowd-pleasing jukebox musical! RECOMMENDED!"
- Los Angeles Times
"The perfect musical—highly entertaining!"
- Stage Scene LA
"The slapstick antics...elevate the piece beyond a nostalgic songfest. The zany plot is vintage I Love Lucy, with a touch of Some Like It Hot."
- BackStage West
Extended through October 11!
Cool your heels at Stages this summer with the regional premiere of this irresistible, toe-tapping, feel-good songfest! Rediscover '40s favorites—like Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree, Rosie the Riveter and Mairzy Doats—that you'll be humming long after you leave the theatre.
It's 1943 in the South Pacific, and tonight the Andrews Sisters headline the big USO show. But when a case of the chickenpox quarantines the girls, intrepid stagehands Max, Lawrence and Patrick, along with pin-up girl Peggy Jones, cook up the perfect way to wow the troops and save the day—all it will take is three wigs and a lot of makeup! Mistaken identities, unrequited love and madcap antics abound in this warm-hearted sendup of the entertainment that sustained a generation.
Part Marx Brothers, Part Hope and Crosby, part Lucy and Ethel, The Andrews Brothers is guaranteed to make you laugh until your sides hurt and sing along with some of the greatest songs of the past century. The more folks we have singing, the more abundant the happiness, so gather the troops and head to the wackiest USO show in the history of the world!
Powerhouse director Leslie Swackhamer (Rabbit Hole, Lady, Amy’s View) brings her extensive opera and musical background to bear, offering Stages audiences a glimpse of her lighter side, while Holland Vavra Peters (The Great American Trailer Park Musical, The Spitfire Grill), Charles Swan (Altar Boyz) and Casey Burden (I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change) join Stages newcomer Ross Chitwood in the dynamic cast. Noted dancer and choreographer Krissy Richmond, a former Houston Ballet principal with extensive Broadway credits, joins the team as choreographer.
